Newcastle Greyhounds are please to announce the AGM on the 15th of June, The board would like all members to attend the night as there are certain issues that the club would like the members to vote on and give there views on, members should note that “members only” will be permitted in at the AGM meeting.

On the night membership numbers will be checked at the gate and each member has to sign in and show ID.

There will be drink and food supplied on the night

We welcome new sponsors B & B Supplies from Wallsend and J.B. Lodge Greyhound Facility as new track signage sponsors. Mick Brown has been a great “silent”, ongoing sponsor of our club, providing all the prizes for our monthly and other member’s draws.
Stay tuned for the announcement of a range of tested Greyhound Kennel cleaning products that have been developed as greyhound friendly, for use by all trainers.
For any buckets, mops and associated products see Mick down at Wallsend for terrific deals.

Sires On Ice at Calga have decided to rejoin our team, with semaphore board sponsorship and we welcome them back to the Newcastle Greyhounds. The big news out of Calga is that the
terrific racedogs “Keybow” along with “Dyna Double One” will have straws available shortly and Tony Wiseman has kindly donated some “Keybow” straws as part feature race prizes which will be used in the near future.
Look for our sponsors on and support those who support us.

I hope to announce 4 new sponsors next week who will join our team and I thank all who support our club, showing confidence in what we are doing.

Restaurant Reopening
The “ANSARA WOK” which has operated for nearly 42 years in Nelson St. Wallsend under the ownership of renowned chef Alex and wife Margarita, have decided to relocate to The Gardens Complex.
Their Asian food is the BEST in Newcastle bar none and I personally vouch for that.
The anticipated opening date is the 1st October and I believe that their existing customers will
follow them across. Details of opening times etc will be announced shortly but they will definitely be open for all meetings.

Week Ending 23rd August, 2015

It’s all happening at The Newcastle Greyhound Club where the great news is that membership is only a couple shy of the magical 200. Don’t forget the terrific membership package on offer which can be viewed on our great website

What about the website? Dimity is doing an extraordinary job updating the site with links to Stories, Living Legends, CEO News, Feature Races, Sponsors etc and more exciting news is that we are setting up a “Services” page for our members to advertise their greyhound related businesses e.g. rearing, breaking-in, training etc. All free of charge to members.

At the foot of our webpage enter your e-mail address and you’ll be on our mailing list for the upcoming proposed Newsletter and other relevant information.

We welcome Brodie Wells Electrical on board as a Major Sponsor for our club. When you next visit The Gardens, you’ll notice all new TVs in the Black Top Lounge, thanks to part of Brodie’ sponsorship deal. This means the latest displays through Skytext as seen in pubs and clubs and clearer pictures for race replays.
Haven’t forgotten all the NRL fans as we try to set up a large TV for the viewing the footy.
Brodie has also come on board as a track signage sponsor as well as plenty of electrical work around the complex. Thanks Brodie and welcome to the Newcastle Team. For any electrical work give Brodie a call on 0439188521 and support our sponsors.
Another new signage sponsor to join the team is Daniel Flanagan from The Heddon Greta Hotel. Daniel is a strong supporter of Greyhound Racing and I urge our members to call in and give his lunch time specials a try. I personally recommend them.
Yet another major sponsor will be announced next week as we work out the fine details.
A warning to any sponsors contemplating getting on board with The Newcastle Club, track signage space is filling fast, so call the club to reserve a space or miss out joining the go ahead team.

I’m sure everyone will notice cosmetic improvements around the track thanks to the great work by the Wallsend Men’s Shed members. Some wood chip in the gardens and a bit of pressure cleaning, a bit of paint and we’re beginning to look loved again We will be trialing a new prototype simulator at today’s Private arm trials. No animal product and a highly sensitive movement sensor for sound. Interested in feedback please.

The Woy Woy Poultry Supplies Black Top heats are on tomorrow and we are expecting great racing. Final prizemoney is $40,000 to the winner and other $5,000 races on the same card are The Macca, The Lord Mayors Cup 600m and the Graeme Henderson Memorial (heats Sat. 22nd for best 32 5th graders).
Don’t forget Living Legends Night on Friday 4th September. This will be a special night when we pay tribute to some great names in greyhound racing. Certainly will be a night to remember with the great ex racer “ Cindeen Shelby” leading runners of the feature race The Shakey Jakey Legends Sprint, to the boxes. This race is a best 8 over 400m NOT 515m as I mentioned earlier. There is a 3rd/4th grade 515m already on the same program.

Week Ending 09/08/2015

Another big week from The Gardens where a working bee on Wednesday by a few terrific volunteers plus committee, saw the removal and replacement of the fence between the grandstand and track. As seen in the attached photo, the new pool type fencing is a big improvement and was well received by on course patrons. Not only was the new fence erected but plenty of weeds were removed from the garden beds and a splash of paint around as well. Small steps but we will gradually have the place looking spick.

Been receiving great feedback from patrons who hired our corporate boxes for functions over the weekend. They were so impressed that they are planning their next gig. Don’t forget to support your own industry and book your functions through us. We can arrange any package to suit, have two large freshly renovated corporate boxes and a restaurant area that seats 120. Catering from full sit down catering with drinks to hot and cold platters. A package to suit all budgets so give the office a call for details.

Really healthy crowds on both Friday and Saturday over the past two weeks and our new lounges in the “Black Top” area are being really well received.. From all reports the lounges are really comfortable.

Big news this week is that Newcastle Greyhound Club has formed a Community alliance with the “Wallsend Men’s Shed” organization. They will occupy temporary office space at The Gardens and with many qualified tradies amongst their group, with take over the general maintenance of the venue. This will include lawn & garden care, painting, high pressure cleaning and removal of rubbish. They will also remove the old “Shipping Container” near the kennel block and other old sheds that will certainly tidy up the venue. Hopefully in the next couple of weeks we will see the Gardens shining.

Am delighted to announce three new sponsors are on board with a handshake and I will be in a position to announce them in next weeks edition. Don’t forget to visit our website on and there is plenty of information regarding everything Newcastle. Our Ambassador Dimity Maher is doing a great job with this site.

We have also formed an alliance with “GreyhoundData .com” and will be advertising through their brilliant site. Will also develop a Newcastle greyhound Club thread in their forum to answer any questions from Data’s members.

Don’t forget our THURSDAY and SATURDAY TRIALS are for your benefit, a disappointing response last week but will persist until we can determine if they are a viable addition to the trialing schedule. See our website for times and charges.

Our major race, The Black Top is on the 21st August with the $40,000 final on FRIDAY NIGHT 28th along with The Lord Mayor’s Cup over 600m for $5,000, The Macca best 8 from the beaten Black Top contestants $5,000 and the Final of the Graeme Henderson Memorial over 515m $5,000 ( heats Sat 22nd August over 515m for best 32 5th graders.

There’s more !!!! The Living Legends Night on Friday 4th Sept with the Feature event The Shakey Jakey Living Legends for the BEST 8 over 400m (was originally stated 515m,however, there was a pre advertised 3rd/4th grade over 515m which will remain on the program). $1500 to the winner plus a free service to Shakey Jakey, compliments of Rocky Ridge Farm.
DON’T MISS THIS NIGHT where we will honour some of the greats of our sport.
Till next week . cheers

Another busy and exciting week at The Gardens with plenty of behind the scenes work yielding good  results.

SPONSORSHIP: We announced last week that Laurie Refalo and Woy Woy Poultry have renewed our association as a sponsor of our major race THE BLACK TOP, ensuring its continued Group Status.
This week I am delighted to say that even with a downturn in the breeding scene, Sam Cauchi from Rocky Ridge Stud at Calga has kindly donated stud services to that freak sprinter, the beautifully bred SHAKEY JAKEY along with a service to the crack sprinter DON’T KNOCKA HIM. David Pringle has also thrown in a service to Jakey’s nicely performed half brother, BUCK FEVER. A big thanks to Sam and David Pringle.

We also welcome on board a new major sponsor to greyhound racing in Chloe & Adam Ramage who have purchased track signage at the winning post. Chloe & Adam have two stores located at Kurri and Cessnock named “KICK FOR TOUCH” which are sports stores specialising in approved NRL footy gear as well as cricketing needs and merchandise for the round ball game. I have a feeling their involvement may lead to some race sponsorship in the future.

Another new signage and race sponsor in Sykes Vet products from Victoria is now on board and we thank Shane and the team for sticking firm through what has been a tough time for the industry.
We certainly hope for a long and fruitful association with all our sponsors and welcome them to the family.

NEW CLUB AMBASSADOR: We are absolutely delighted to announce that Dimity Maher has joined the Newcastle team as our Ambassador. Dimity is a past Young Participant of the Year Award Winner, is a journalist, works full time at Singleton Council, is studying Law, manages greyhound syndicates and owns greyhounds. Quite a regime, however, her biggest asset is her passion for and knowledge of, the industry.

It is intended that Dimity will be a fresh face of the industry as viewed by the general community as we enter a new phase where community acceptance is necessary. Dimity is also updating our web site and Facebook pages. I very much look forward to working with this delightful young lady.

MEMBERSHIP INFORMATION: Membership continues to grow with about 160 on our books and plenty of application forms on the way in.

Don’t forget the first of our MAJOR MEMBERSHIP DRAWS will take place this Friday at the presentation of The LAURIE HEALION MAIDEN FINAL. A Chef Kinox Saucepan set valued at nearly $600 kindly donated by Mick Brown of B. & B. Supplies is the prize and the winner MUST be on course and collect within 5 minutes of the draw.

PROPOSED TRIALLING SCHEDULE:  We have been receiving feedback regarding a proposed new trailing schedule where Monday afternoon trials remain the same, Tuesdays are still booked private trials with NO ARM trials ,but a simulator on string can be used post trial. A NEW Thursday time slot with Public trials for an hour followed by private pre-booked ARM or Ordinary trials. Also on Thursday, 10 minute time slots will be available for pup education in the secured area between catching pen and return gate. The use of a carriage (not connected to cable) will be made available as well as one staff member. Friday trials after the meeting as well as NEW Saturday trials at conclusion of the meeting for the benefit of our country participants.

Only a couple of negative thoughts but the overall feedback has been overwhelmingly in favour.
As such the above format WILL COMMENCE 1st AUGUST. This is the last attempt to get Thursday trialing working, so please support the concept or Thursday trialing will be gone forever. Get in early for the best timeslots. DON’T FORGET NO AMIMAL FUR ON YOUR SIMULATORS !
Full details available on web site, facebook page or by phoning the club.
We are looking to get on line trial bookings available as well as an online newsletter.
RACING: Friday night saw the running of three Semi Finals of the Laurie Healion Maiden on a track affected by rain. Race reports and summaries are elsewhere in this paper so I won’t duplicate ,but the standout performance of the night belonged to the Jason Mackay trained Chevy Prince, which defeated a strong field in 29.66secs on a track that looked at least a couple of tenths slow.

What a great final is looming and a huge congratulations to all connections of greyhounds that have qualified.
